How To Join eBay

While some people think everyone is already joined up on eBay, the reality is millions of people out there have yet to experience or enjoy eBay. Some may own a computer for the very first time. Others may finally trust online purchases. Whatever the case, some of you are asking, “How to Join eBay?”

  1. Go to in ebay and click on the “Register” link. Or click here to go directly to the registration form.
  2. Fill out the Registration Form (3-5 minutes)
  3. Choose an eBay user ID and password
  4. Select a secret question and answer
  5. Read User Agreement and Privacy Policy
  6. Agree to documents plus verify that you are 18 or older
  7. Finish Registration process

The “Tell us about yourself?” section is the first area of the registration form you will fill out. Read what each box is requesting, click inside the box, and type in the information.

It’s required to enter your name, address, and telephone number for shipping purposes. The email address is required because it’s the only way eBay can stay in contact with you. If you purchase an item, the seller may stay in contact with you through email. If you sell an item, you may contact the buyer through his or her email.

Selecting a user ID (or username) and password is important. Take your time here. Think about a username that incorporates both letters and numbers. Make it somewhat complex but not complicated enough that it’s easy to forget or misspell.

Bad user ID: man5
Good user ID: IceMac5253

Anytime the registration form asks you to re-enter something they do so in order to ensure you type in the correct answer that you wanted. If the second answer does not match the first, the registration form will notify you.

Users will also select a secret question out of this list:

  • What street did you grow up on?
  • What is your mother’s Maiden name?
  • What is the name of your first school?
  • What is your pet’s name?
  • What is your Father’s middle name?
  • What is your school’s mascot?

After you select a secret question, you type in the answer to that secret question.

Example: What is your Father’s middle name? Answer: James

The secret question is only used when an individual forgets his or her password. If you cannot remember the password needed to sign into eBay, the site will send you an email with the secret question. Since you know the answer to “What is your Father’s middle name?” is James, you type in that response, eBay verifies that it is the correct answer (based on what you typed in during the registration process), and sends you the password assuming the two answers match.

eBay users must be 18 years of age or older. If you are not yet that old, you cannot sign up for an eBay account under any circumstance. eBay does this to prevent children from getting taken advantage of and since you need a credit card to purchase anything on eBay, it really is not relevant to children anyways. Parents of children may sign up for an account and bid/purchase an item for their child. Just make sure you do not sign up for an account and immediately hand over the user ID and password to the child. You never know what they may purchase or do with your personal information.

Finish the registration by re-entering the correct verification code displayed in the box above. You will continue to get directed back to the registration page so long as you continue to type in the wrong verification code.

Agree to the terms of use and click “Continue.” Congratulations, you are now an official member of eBay and you can enjoy all of the site’s services for no price.
