How To Become a Member on eBay

how to become a member on ebay

This guide will walk you through the process of becoming an eBay member. It’s very simple and straighforward. So go ahead and get started now. There are 9 quick steps for you to follow. After completing the following instructions you’ll be a full member on ebay and you’ll be able to buy and sell to your heart’s content!

Step 1
Visit ebay

Step 2
At the top left hand corner is the eBay logo followed by the line, “Welcome! Sign in or Register.” Click on the “Register” link.

Step 3
Start with the “Tell us about yourself” section. Begin by typing in your first and last name. Enter your street address, city, state/province, ZIP/postal code, and country. Enter the primary telephone number you can be reached at. Start with the area code followed by the seven digit number. Enter any extensions if applicable. Telephone numbers are only required in case there are questions about your account. eBay will contact you primarily through an email address. Enter the email address you wish to be reached at. Re-enter the address to make sure it’s correct.

Step 4
Choose your user ID and password. All the fields in this section are required. Create your eBay user ID. The user ID is what you will sign into eBay under the “username” field. Use letters or numbers, but not symbols. You can check the availability of the username by clicking, “Check Availability.” Create a password that you will use in association with the username when signing in. Make sure the password is something easy for you to remember and that you write it down and store it in a safe place. eBay password essentials include:

  • 6-20 characters
  • Mix of letters, numbers, or symbols
  • Password must not be similar to user ID or email
  • Not easily guessed (example: abc123
  • Keep in mind that the passwords are “case sensitive,” which means you must type out the password exactly how you did the first time or it will not be valid.

    Example: BiGgame1999 (original password)

  • biggame1999 (would NOT be correct)
  • BiGgame1999 (would be correct)
  • Re-enter your password to make sure you spelled it right. eBay uses a secret question concept for retrieving your lost password. If you cannot remember your password, eBay will send the secret question to your email. If you type in the answer that matches the one at registration, eBay will send you the password once again. The list of secret questions you may choose from:

  • What street did you grow up on?
  • What is your mother’s Maiden name?
  • What is the name of your first school?
  • What is your pet’s name?
  • What is your Father’s middle name?
  • What is your school’s mascot?
  • What is nice about the secret question concept is the fact that users can create a personalized answer from a selection of questions that they and a few others are only likely to know.

Now you need to type in the secret question. Make sure the answer to the question is a given. For example, if you have five pets, you may struggle to remember which of your five pets you put under the answer to ‘What is your pet’s name?”

Enter your date of birth in order to finish this section. Users of eBay must be 18 years or older. Not 18 but see something you want to bid on. Ask your father or mother to create an account and bid on the item for you.

    Step 5
Enter the verification code listed in the picture above. Having trouble reading the code? Attempt to refresh the image. You may also listen to the verification code. eBay will not continue the registration process until what you type in the verification box matches the verification code. In case you were wondering, the verification code is used to prevent hackers and spammers from penetrating the site.

    Step 6
Read the “User Agreement” and “Privacy Policy.” Once you have fully read and agreed to the terms, click on the “I agree” box located just under the verification code. When you click on the “I agree” box you also agree to receive communications from eBay (something you can change later under “My eBay”) and you are at least 18 years old.

    Step 7
    Click “Continue.”

    Step 8
New users are given the opportunity to sign up for Pay Pal (highly recommended), which is the primary escrow system between buyer and seller that is used on eBay. Users can also sign up for Pay Pal later.

    Step 9
New users will receive a conformational email requesting them to click on the link contained inside the email. Open up the message and click on the link. Congratulations, you are all set up!
