1. Think small!

A common mistake new eBay entrepreneurs and sellers make is buying large amounts of stock, before they know if they have a hot seller on their hands. They also rush into things before they even know how eBay itself functions. Selling on eBay tends to be more complex than buying.

Over time you’ll gain experience and learn the way eBay works. Once you’ve figure whats selling well you can then buy large amounts of start to sell.

We recommend that for the first few months that you just try to buy and sell items that aren’t expensive and that vary widely. This won’t strain your budget and you’ll learn about various markets. Once you’ve found items that really sell well then you can really start to make some good money.

Also, think physically small. Large items tend not to sell well on eBay (with some exceptions) due to exorbitant shipping fees. So try to sell products that are easy to ship!

2. Be available and respond promptly.

You should always respond to inquires about your items promptly. The internet is used by people who want something and they want it fast. Sometimes it’s information, other times it’s a product. For this reason you must stay on top of your eBay messages from prospective buyers. Once you’ve gotten more established you could even hire someone fulltime to just do this. The more effective and the quicker you respond to questions the more likely someone is to buy from you.

3. Schedule your time properly and stay organized.

Make a list of things that need to be done and stick to it! If ebay isn’t your full time job you’ll only have some spare time to keep your eBay business rolling. Obviously once eBay becomes your full time job this becomes more important. The beauty of this is that you always know when and what needs to be done, so keep a to list or journal.

4. Use professional looking photographs.

Ever heard the saying “A picture speaks a thousand words”? It remains true to this day. If a picture is bad quality and looks unprofessional or if the item is hard to see, the buyer may not bid on your item. This is not what you want. Even if you have to spen extra money on better lightning or a photo tent, you must ensure your pictures look professional and are appealing! This is super important.

5. There’s more than just eBay.

eBay is THE king when it comes to places to start selling products, but eBay is not the only option. You need a presence on the web and you should think about that very early on. You could use Myspace or place an Yahoo classifieds. The main thing here is not to remember that there is more it than just eBay itself. Building your online profile can be done cheaply and easily in various ways. Consider outsourcing the design of your website on elance.com

6. Lookout for different products that might sell well.

Just because you’ve found a hot product and have some good stock doesn’t mean you should become complacent. Observe the activities of other traders. Read articles in magazines, look for emerging trends, programs for home decoration, etc. You may have overlooked a new hot item or niche to start getting into.

7. Keep in touch with your supplier.

If you dropship make sure you lots unnecessary work can be created when your supplier runs out of stock and you have a backlog of orders. An angry customers may want their order(s) refunded and this will cause you headaches and even hurt the bottom line. All you have to do is make sure the communication with your supplier is open. Trust us, your life will be easier.

8. Market Research and Keyword Research.

Your goal is to have customers reach your listings and your products with with ease. One way to do this is by doing some simple keyword research. You should allocate some time on a regular basis so that you can keep abreast of what people are searching for and what’s new.

9. Use software to organize your listings.

You have many options for listing your items. But it boils down to whether or not you want to list them by hand or use software. We’ve found that if you have to list more than 15 items at a time without using software it will be very difficult and costly. Given that, you should really use software if you have many items to list. Just do some research, there are plenty of software solutions for eBay sellers.

10. Offer free shipping, if you can!

Prospective bidders are far more likely to big if you offer free shipping. However, just make sure it doesn’t cut into your profit margins too much. Consider the weight of your item and the fact that depending on distance, the cost of shipping can vary wildly. Don’t allow it to cripple your profit and offer free shipping only if you can afford it.

Happy selling!

eBay is at the world center for online trading. Millions of users take advantage of the site where they may sell or buy just about anything they would ever want. From the most essentially to the most bizarre, anything and everything is available for purchase on eBay and at a great rate too. Opening up an account on eBay is free. Here is a guide for how to open an eBay account for new users.

First, visit at www.ebay.com and click on “Register.” Returning users will click on “Sign In.”

The registration page is fairly straightforward and easy to navigate. Some people may wonder why eBay needs personal information like your phone number. To answer your question, eBay only uses the number when they are having problems with your account and need to contact you promptly. This rarely happens and you’ll more than likely never hear from eBay outside your email.

On the registration page enter your name, address, and country. Enter the telephone number followed by an email address. Keep in mind your email address is the primary way eBay will contact you so select an email you check often. Re-enter the email address to make sure it is the correct one.

Select a user ID and password. Keep in mind that these two items are what you need to log onto eBay each and every time. Therefore it is important to select a user ID and password that you will remember and is not too complicated. Then again avoid a very bland and simple username and password. eBay requires all users to create a user ID that combines letters with numbers. eBay also requires all passwords to be 6-20 characters in length, a combination of letters, numbers, or symbols, and something that is not similar to the user ID or email nor easily guessed. Passwords are case sensitive.

Re-enter the password to couple check it is right. Enter your birthday to show proof of your age. Individuals under the age of 18 may not sign up for an eBay account. Select a secret question and answer needed for when you forget your password and need to retrieve it.

Enter the verification code by referencing the six digit/letter code in the box above. The verification code is for added security purposes. If you have trouble reading the code you can refresh it or hear it. The registration is not valid until the verification code you type in matches the visual in the box.

Read the User Agreement and Privacy Policy. While it may read dull and boring, the two documents are used to protect your privacy and ensure a safe trading place on eBay. Understand your rights and the rights of eBay. Click on “I Agree” after you have read the two documents.

Individuals with new accounts are presented the opportunity to also sign up for PayPal while joining eBay. PayPal is the primary escrow system used on eBay and 70% or more of the sellers on eBay will request payment through PayPal. PayPal is also free and only takes a few minutes to sign up for. PayPal is also 100% safe because it prevents personal information (such as social security number, credit card number, etc) from being exchanged from buyer to seller or vice versa.

Once you click on the link in the confirmation email you are all finished. Enjoy your stay on eBay!

Buying on eBay is really easy and mostly a manner of staying on top of things while finding the great deals. Selling on the other hand is a little more difficult and does take some time to master. This tutorial will help walk you through everything you need to know to start selling on eBay today!

You’ll find on eBay that buyers are in a rush to find great deals. They are not going to waste a lot of time going through each and every item in a category. Since you know this, the best way to catch a buyer’s eye is through a great title. Titles take some time to master but are the major invite towards landing a deal. Titles may include anything from the Brand Name to the price to the rarity of the item. Great titles often are short, to the point, and include popular search engine keywords. Do not write things sleazy titles like, “So Good, You Know it’s a Steal!” Instead, stick to the basics and include popular search words.

Photos are also incredibly important and not just “stock photos.” Stock photos are referred to photos the companies which produce the product use. Stock photos will work for brand new items because there is nothing “new” to see. However eBay buyers hate products that are advertised as used yet contain only a stock photo. This stock photo does little to tell them about how good of shape the product is in. Sure you’re description of the product will help inform them but anyone can say they’re beat-up vehicle is “a timeless classic.” Photos say more than words. Include 3-4 quality photos for any used product.

Product descriptions are important when they add new and insightful information. Do not explain the pictures already show. Instead use concise and well organized descriptions. Include bold headlines, bulleted lists, and include bare essentials about product.

You can always learn a lot from others who know what they are doing. The same is true with selling on eBay. Check out what “Powersellers” are doing. They do not just get this title for doing nothing. They are masters at selling. Also check out what the same product you are selling is generally going for. Who will buy your used item for $20 when you can buy one new for $22? Start pricing low with no reserves. Make a lot of sales and satisfied customers will add to your reputation.

Shipping is another big draw. Generally people like things to arrive quicker rather than later. Try to be fair and meet the customer’s needs. Also include certain deals where you pay for the shipping and handling.

Buyers also appreciate a seller who will answer their questions. Prospective buyers may ask any question about the product during the biding phase. Make sure you get back to their questions fast and your answers are clear and help solve their concerns. Also communicate with the eventual buyer of the product. Thank them for the purchase. Notify them when you ship the product. Ask if you can do anything else for them. Make sure you request final positive feedback on the purchase to help build your eBay reputation. Communication and good will goes a long way.

eBay will provide step-by-step directions and forms for selling an item after you log into eBay and click on “Sell an Item” under the “Sell” tab on the top right hand corner.

Selling goods on eBay has become one of the most lucrative online business arrangements. Many people think that succeeding in an eBay business is effortless — this is a misconception. Yes, running an eBay business is relatively easy, but it still needs to be structured in a very systematic manner. There is some basic planning that should be incorporated at the time of launching your eBay business.

Getting Started on eBay
The most fundamental step in starting an eBay business is understanding your priorities and availability of resources. These can be easily evaluated by answering certain questions:

Do you plan to use eBay as a part-time or full-time source of income?

Are you passionate about the kind of products and services you are willing to offer?

Is the amount of time that is needed on a daily basis compatible with your lifestyle?

Do you want to be an online retailer, affiliate or just a dropshipper?

Do you have access to procuring the goods, you plan to advertise, on a regular basis?

Which selling format is easier for you to handle — eBay auctions or selling goods for a fixed price?

Registration
Once you have answered these questions, you will feel confident about starting your eBay venture and a basic outline for your business plan will begin to emerge. Now, it is time to be registered as an eBay Seller.

Just visit eBay’s Home Page> Click on the ‘Sell’ tab

The page provides you systematic (step-by-step) guidelines for registering yourself

Make sure to provide the latest and fully-functional contact and financial information, including banks and credit cards

Taking Precautions As An eBay Seller
Once the registration is completed, it is time to organize your business options.

As a general practice, many eBay sellers tend to file for incorporation — Limited Liability Company (LLC).

Inventory — create a proper format for calculating expenses and profits in a detailed manner. Ensure that you maintain separate accounting books of your eBay venture, which will further help you, file your taxes.

Insurance — some eBay entrepreneurs take extra precaution in the form of seeking insurance coverage for their business.

Legalities — there might be some localities where conducting business from home might lead to some extra form of taxation or it could be deemed as violating regulations. Check-out such issues and complete all the formal paperwork.

Make Informed Decisions
Success as an eBay seller doesn’t come easy as you have numerous competitors to compete against. One aspect that most eBay sellers tend to ignore is using the site’s resources in educating themselves about the best business practices that should be followed. Some of these recommendations are listed on www.ebay.com/university.

Renting Options
When you begin any business venture, the idea is to seek maximum security (the least risks) and an eBay business is no different. Instead, of outrightly renting a huge warehouse facility, begin with using yours or some nearby garage, spare sheds or even the basement to store goods.

Payment Options
This could be one tricky aspect. Many customers might have an aversion to a payment method that appears convenient to you. The solution lies in seeking a universally acceptable mode of receiving payments. For this purpose, PayPal is highly recommended since it carries out transactions rather quickly and the services are quite cheap. It provides the facility of linking your banking accounts and credit cards for sending/receiving money, all around the world. Further, its registration process is very simple and asks for a limited proof.

Optimization
There are literally thousands of serious and prospective buyers who are always streaming through eBay product categories in search of that ‘special’ offer. While some of them are looking for the latest items, some are bothered only for discounted items and many are there just hoping that some extraordinary offer might come their way. Your eBay store should be able to attract all sorts of visitors.

It has to be a blend of exclusive, contemporary, outrightly cheap/discounted and seasonal goods. Again, you have to ensure that when visitors conduct an eBay search, the chances of your goods being shown in the search results is the maximum. This is something parallel to search engine optimization. For this purpose, carefully choose the words you use to describe your merchandise. Each item should be listed with a name that contains important keywords and a hint of your exclusive offer.

The most convenient way of establishing your online business is by becoming a registered seller on eBay. Registering on eBay as a seller isn’t difficult and neither is listing your products on it. In fact, at any given point, eBay boasts of having thousands of registered sellers working from home, advertising their goods. However, a usual problem that many online sellers on eBay face is that of being unable to attract a decent amount of web traffic towards their merchandise. Thus, the biggest challenge in making your home-based eBay enterprise profitable is creating enough queries and eventually sales for the products you are offering. This can be achieved through a combination of the following:

1. Offering Goods That Complement Contemporary Demand Trends

This problem can be easily solved if you are able to offer goods/services that are in-sync with the current demand trend among the online shoppers. This can be easily done by using eBay in two ways:

A. What’s Hot
The site has a dedicated section titled, ‘What’s Hot’. It is listed in the ‘selling resources’ section in the form of a link. This section has a list of goods:

towards which a high volume of enquiries have been generated

that are being sold in great numbers by many online retailers, including those on eBay

that have generated a lot of curiosity due to their unique features

Advantages
At the time of starting your online eBay business, you would have access to restricted merchandise. This section lists the most in-demand goods for every category. This further simplifies the process of zooming-in on goods that suite your current availability, preference and price. Other benefits include:

eBay itself ensures that the kind of merchandise shown here is updated regularly

Once, you know what goods are in demand, it becomes easier to operate your business from home, as you know exactly what goods need to be acquired

You have the comfort of scrolling through this list, at your home, and for no charges, i.e. this service is free

B. eBay Pulse
Another initiative taken by eBay to help its sellers is the ‘eBay Pulse’ page. This is a slightly tweaked and a more precise format of the ‘What’s Hot’ section, i.e. the listed goods are not in accordance with demand trends or preferences tracked over a few weeks/months but on a daily basis.

2. Selling Merchandise At Prices Lower Than Your Competitors
This is perhaps the most challenging part of being a home-based seller on eBay. Prices are generally the biggest factor when it comes to a customer’s buying preference, particularly in the online mode. So how do you offer merchandise at competitive rates? This can be done by:

Buying in bulk from wholesale traders

Procuring goods from Start-up businesses that are desperate to launch their products

Buying seasonal goods in the off-season and then selling them at higher prices when their demand begins to rise

Seeking usually-neglected items such as spares from the home, office and nearby businesses who might be happy to sell-off their ‘junk’

Teaming up with repairers/rehabilitators who are good at creating fresh-looking items from second-hand goods. This is particularly applicable to apparels and electronic items.

Affiliate: An Alternate Approach To eBay Business
Whenever the term ‘eBay business’ is used, it generates an image of products being sold by online sellers. Yes, this is the most common form of home-based business opportunity offered by eBay. However, this isn’t the only way in which eBay can be used to generate decent earnings. There is another option which doesn’t involve any sort of ‘direct’ buying. You can create an eBay business by becoming an Affiliate. That way, you don’t have to be concerned about procuring the goods.

Who Is An eBay Affiliate?
This is a simple way of creating a steady source of income from eBay. As a part of the Affiliate Program, you are supposed to only list the goods for sale and not purchase/procure them.

How To Operate An eBay Affiliate Program?
eBay gives you the liberty to launch affiliate websites. It has an entire page dedicated towards this purpose. For starting your eBay affiliate business, you need to create a personalized, content-rich site that lists items belonging to a particular genre of your choice. If an online shopper wants to purchase an item listed on your site, he/she will be directed to eBay and if an actual sale is registered, you would be awarded a commission.
